Description: In response to demand from humanitarian agencies for guidance on reducing excess mortality from common illnesses during an influenza pandemic, the WHO in collaboration with external partners has developed practical and simplified recommendations on measures that can be implemented by community-based responders to complement national Pandemic Preparedness Plans. The two main objectives of document are:

* To provide strategies for prevention and treatment, at the community and household levels, of the most likely contributors to mortality from common illnesses during an influenza pandemic.
* To provide recommendations to support a minimum level of continuity for priority public health programmes during a pandemic.
